i bought this jaycar mono a while back but was having troubles with it from day 1.... you would crank it with just with only 2x pioneer 350W subs connected and it would last about 2 maybe 3 songs then go into protection???? its been a major thorn in my side as every time i took it back it would work for more then 5 tracks :@ then about as soon as i went to drive away it would die :@ making my look like a complete dickhead! all this would happen without the amp EVEN GETTING HOT!????????
ive tried everything with this amp... different subs, ran 0 guage instead of 4 guage then even put a 12V truck battery in the boot, changed the head unit and even went out and bought some really thick shielded rca leads and just to put into perspective of how desperate i was to find the problem i even tried welding the earth lug to the body of the car! nothing has worked im hopeing that some 1 may have an idea on what may be causing it to die? cause im stumped lol _________________ TO FAST TO LIV - TO YOUNG TO DIE

Nah running the amp at 2 ohm will be fine for the subs, certainly wouldnt cause the amp to go into protect.
I think the guys are trying to find out the exact subs he's using and how they are wired.
I have heard of other people with issues using this amp at 1 ohm, going into protect too. Try running the amp at 2 or even 4 ohm to see if the problem goes away. _________________ Custom Car Stereo Systems |

nah, thats not so much a problem, its better to over power subs, then underpower anyway. when the amp starts distoring thats when you blow subs (i've done a voice coil this way), and you dont hear the distortion as easy either, it definately not a bad idea to have more power then the subs are rated at.
that said, you still cant just turn it right up, cause the subs wont handle the power, but yea, you get the idea _________________

haha oh ok, guess my rule of stay a little under wat the speaker can take doesnt work with subs then but stay under peak power right ? _________________ †Let Me See You Laugh At My Car Wen Ur Eating Its Dust† |

Youre far better off to go with a little higher power when finding an amp to suit speakers.......say youve got 80wrms speakers, look for an amp that produces 90-100wrms per channel.
Most amp makers state their power ratings at 14.4v and with a fixed load (impedance). Once speakers start working their impedance goes up not to mention the voltage is below 14.4v especially if you have the headlights on or a big sound system. So you can see how the output of an amp can reduce when "real world" variations come into play.
Sorry for the rant but just thought i put you on the right track _________________ Custom Car Stereo Systems |

my question is how big is the wire between amp 2 subs and have you got nice grounding? _________________ TM.

• 1000WRMS @ 1 ohm mono 14.4V
• 600WRMS @ 2 ohms mono 14.4V
• 1800WRMS @ 2 ohm linkable, dual mono 14.4V
make sure u get the correct ohmage
looking at jaycar's response they're 4 ohms, which would mean they'd need to be wired parrallel with the 600WRMS@2ohms which probably wouldnt be good for the 350 watt subs, but im new to this game, so someone correct me if im wrong |
thats the amp! if you have a look at the pic closely there is 4 speaker terminals (for bridging with another identical amp if you want to crank out a nice 1800W) i had the subs wired in 8 guage both separately to either 2 sets of terminals.... that would be 4 ohm unless it has the terminals paralled internially which would bring it down to 2ohm. but i dont think it would be as you would not be able to strap them if it was....... i think.....
as for the subs...they were stolen so i couldnt get you a model number but i know they were the base model (single voice coil) of the TS-W2504SPL..... i think they were 350watts rms at 4ohm....
a vague description would be... they looked like a sun flower lol and you could get them in duel voice coil and thoes ones had "chanpion series" also known as the ( TS-W307D2 ) in red writing on the dust cover.... hope that helps cause i know it confuses me even more just reading it lol _________________ TO FAST TO LIV - TO YOUNG TO DIE

The 4 speaker terminals are for doing just what youve done.....wiring two subs to it. They are internally joined together.
You would need a second amp to "strap" them together to produce 1800wrms @ 2 ohm.
Are the subs you have at the moment dual voice coil? (do they have two + and two - terminals on the back of the speaker)
It should say on the back of the speaker what impedance it is, like 2 ohm DVC. If youre in doubt just write down the model number (also on the back of the speaker) and post it here, we will be able to tell you what impedance they are. _________________ Custom Car Stereo Systems |

the subs i have atm are 2x MTX 7500 12" in an mtx duel enclosure running fine off an old school clarion mono (out of the back of MR-10-UD's lil kia sportarge) lol....
the subs i had before i described them as best i could in the last post... as i said they got STOLEN .. so i couldnt get you a model or part number
i do know they were single voice coil and rated at 4ohms!
i tried various other subs supplied by friends direct out of the boot of their own cars (1 sub single coil) (2 sub single coil) (4 sub single coils) (1sub duel coil) (2 sub duel coil) all with prety much the same issue just different amount of time before protection came on :@
anyway im off to another 12hr session of crappy work
hopefully this helps ill let you all ponder on the issue a bit cause it still has me baffled
TM. point taken i was a lil frustrated when i wrote that... a lot of testing and no positive outcome....... u know what i mean :/ _________________ TO FAST TO LIV - TO YOUNG TO DIE

Ah OK, sorry didnt get what you said in your last post
Well seeing as youve done alot of testing using different subs etc. I would put it down to an amp fault unfortunately. As i said ive seen a few go into protect frequently when running at 1 ohm, but never at 2 ohm.....
So Youve got one of those amps out of MR-LOUDs car ay? Did he still have the 4 x Kenwood 12s in a 'V" ?
I built that box / installed that gear a few years ago for him. _________________ Custom Car Stereo Systems |

LOL, nah i didnt do the speaker / amp setup in his car, just the sub box, sub amps and Optima YT. Yeah he kept saying to me he wanted 4 x 12s in his car, i told him they wont fit....what you saw was the end result
Im sorry to hear about the Jaycar mono.....they used to make some tough amps (silver series and before), i personally havent used the black ones but have installed them for several customers. I would be returning it to Jaycar and asking (well....demanding) for a new one. If they dont have any in stock then get your money back, good luck anyway. _________________ Custom Car Stereo Systems |

yeah i have heard that these are a tough amp too and the numbers do stack up but if all else fails a new one is a good option. _________________ TM.
