Girlfriend has an AE92 Corolla hatchback, just got it back on the road, everything with it is decent (a few odds and ends need cleaning up) as far as I know.

Here is where the question is coming from (I'll ask in a sec ), the thing is slower than my grandfather upon take off. I'm talking 0-60 in about 6 - 7 seconds.... @.@

The question (told you it would only be a second): what should I look for, to fix, for such a performance decrease?

The gearbox is new, and installed by pros, but in first gear it revs off it's tits and jumps into second... Could that be an engine tuning problem? All the fluids are new, sparks are new etc...

Some help would be great, sick of not feeling anything when she uses that lead foot of hers :p

geussin its auto the way u said it revs off its tits and jumps into second, could b a tuning problem with the ECU as it might not have been rest when the gearbox was put in

u can reset it by diconecting the the battery for about 5-10mins than put the terminal bak on and start the car (with out revin it) just let it idle for about 5mins than take it 4 a drive (turn radio, lights, other things that take power that u dont have 2 have off will help abit)

the other thing have u acutely checked the fluid level it may b a bit low but u need 2 check it when the car is at idle

do you know if its the 4age motor, or one of the normal, smaller motors?

also, a 4 cyl auto will not normally go that great, maybe it goes as good as it will.

is it efi, or carby? cause carby can be tuned up abit easiliy, but efi is not that simple.

im not sure if the efi is coil pack or distributor, and if you could easily advance the timing abit, could atleast be worth checking the timing if you could.

chuck up a picture of the engine bay if you dont know much about it and i'd be able to help some more from there, once i know what motor it is.

I got an auto service on mine today and damn does it go better now.

If it's auto I recommend it.

It's a 3spd auto. 1.6ltr, carby fed Inline 4.

User manual tells me that from factory the engine put out:

102 bhp
Torque measurements didn't give me a base RPM to read off, so couldn't give you that.
Compression ratio was 9.5:1
Bore X stroke = 3.20 X 3.00

As I said in the first post, the engine needs a SLIGHT bit of work, but i don't think anything major, bearings are fine, head is fine, no leaks, oil has been changed regularly, as with coolant etc, it may need a tune and that's about it. Doesn't sound like it's missing, not from what I can hear.

It's got me stumped. I know it's not a sports car, but with your foot flat to the floor, it still feels like you're not moving, ya know? Even in second, there still isn't that acceleration push. But it has no trouble reaching 100+km/h... Even while all seats loaded.

I don't want her spinning the tyres on take off or anything silly like that, I just want to know that if trouble comes up, she isn't going to be a sitting duck.

yea, check your auto oil level.

make sure to check it in park at idle.
if its low, or over full, it can make it slip or play up.

you can do a service on the auto yourself if your up for it, should be able to get a kit from repco, drop the oil, change the filter, new gasket, then top it back up with oil, otherwise take it somewhere to do it.

you could try cleaning the carby out, take the air cleaner off, get some carby clean (super cheap, a few bucks), rev it up abit, then spray carby clean straight down the mouth, it'll sutter and cough, hold the throttle on, it'll come back (unless you spray to much in), do this several times and it'll clean gunk and stuff out good.

there is an idle and a mixture screw on a carby, but i cant really explain how to set them without been there.

you said its got plugs, might be fuel pump problem, or fuel filter, could also be collapsed / blocked cat in the exhaust, they will strangle a car.

well theres some stuff to try, apart from that, its a 1.6 carby with an auto, they just aren't that quick.

u mean motor tom not ur auto lol, atf (auto transmatic fluid) is ran in auto trans well mostly some use a synthetic oil (dear stuff)

yea cat could b clogged up wit crap, is there anyway u can unbolt the exhast from the cat ?? normaly there is a flange just b4 it, and take it round the block and c if it makes a difference

well both my cars are auto thats why i said i run them on 98 and that helps the pickup i feel.

but an auto service really got the pickup working for me.

running 98 octane fuel wont make as much of a difference on a carby car, unless you tune it up for it, as in an efi car, the ecu learns and adjusts the tune for the better fuel, but yea, a carby car is a static tune, doesnt adapt. if you run better fuel (9 you can advance the timing more as it will not ping as easy under load.

i would strongly suggest to check fuel filter if its hasnt been changed recently. find the filter, undo the hoses, take it out (trying to keep abit of fuel in it) and then get a white rag and pour the fuel out backwards (oppiste to the fuel flow), blow some air into one end to chase it out abit, if there is dirt and bits of stuff mixed with the fuel on the white rag, then you need to change your fuel filter, if the rag has only fuel on it, then its fine, put it back in.

my lil corolla doesnt go very quick when its turned down but if i turn it up the speed is pritty good. but i got a few things done to mine aswell so yea.
